Metal Loss from Galaxies

How many of the metals a galaxy makes in its stars remain in the galaxy; how many of those metals are ejected from a galaxy?

Led by UW graduate student Grace Telford (now Dr. Telford), our work published in the Astrophysical Journal presented the most detailed calculation to-date for the Andromeda galaxy, showing that it has lost more than half of the metals it made in its stars.
